The Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 1

A Radio show needs a lot of planning requirements in order to create a successful broadcast and every radio show needs this planning before the broadcast can commence for public critique. The radio show that I have studied is The Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw which is on BBC Radio 1 at 6:30am, weekdays.

The first thing that will need to be held is a production meeting. In this meeting, the producer of the show, in this case Matt Fincham, will work closely with the DJ of the show, in this case Nick Grimshaw, to plan the content for their upcoming broadcast. This will include a time schedule of the show which will tell the DJ when he will be talking on air and and what times they will be playing songs, which they would also need to select themselves before the show.

Also in the production meeting, there will be time to plan for an entertainment area of the show. This will include planning for any games which they wish to put into their broadcast which the public can get involved with. By doing this, they will need to plan many aspects of the game, including a catchy name and jingle (which will need to be recorded and produced themselves), the aim of the game and the prize for the winner. Once this is done, they may wish to invite a guest onto the show. This guest will usually be a celebrity who would like to advertise their new single, or a new programme they are featured on. It will be the producers job to ask the celebrities management about the agreement in advance so both sides have time to fit it into their schedule. All of this would be planned in advance of the live show.

Once the production meeting is over, there are a few more things which need to be done before the show goes live on air. The producer would need to check that all the songs that wish to be played on the show, are on the database and that if they’re not, they are put in there so they can play them. Another important task which would need undertaking is the checking of the equipment. This needs to be checked to make sure that all of it works and that the spares for guests also work, as this is at the heart of the show. The guests will also need to be briefed on their role in the show and what to do. Also the producer will need to produce the jingle for the game show which would be used in the broadcast.

Once all this has been done, the radio show can be aired and the public will be able to listen to the show with ease. Pre-production is a necessary requirement for every radio show, as without it, the broadcast would have no clear structure and no clear schedule. The breakfast show with Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 1 has a clear schedule as every feature on the show has a specific time in which it is broadcast.
